STAN THE MAN !!!!! 2016 US OPEN CHAMPION
This year in US Open, I supported a player with all my heart like many of the tennis fans did: Juan Martin Del Potro from Argentina.
A great player, a great guy and incredibly lovely figure for tennis world. US Champion of 2009, had a wildcard to play in this Grand Slam and had done a great job to reach Semi-finals after 3 years.
He was beaten by another decent, humble guy and also a great player: Stan Wawrinka from Switzerland!
So, when Stan reached the final against Djokovic ( who still wins most of the tournaments through the year), I had no choice but support Stan the Man!!
It was a great match that we all - i mean tennis audience- even forgot the scandal semi-final match that took place 2 days ago between Monfils and Djokovic. As much as Monfils claimed that he tried a new tactic against Novak to explain his super bizarre game plan, for my opinion it was something else and it was such a waste of time for me. I was angry to Monfils, first I did not even understand why he was playing that weird , when the audience in Arthur Ashe stadium booed him, he kind of got himself and took 1 set. But that was all. The strangest match that I ever watched ended in 4 set and left us in a bad taste in our mouths:/
Anyway, lets come to the final match: Djokovic started solid as mostly he does, Stan was a bit slow , even in the first set it was 4-1 to Novak, Stan could manage to bring it to 5-all. At that point it was so clear that Stan found a way to solve his game. When it comes to tie-break, Novak is better than Stan. First set went to Novak 7-6 . The thing is Djokovic had a very strange and lucky draw this year in US Open, 3 opponents withdraw the tournament because of injuries. He was not even tested properly. On the other hand, Stan had to face strong rivals like Del Po, Nishikori- who defeated Murray and made a huge surprise( in fact Murray lost his focus and temper by himself and found a way to be beaten up by a samurai :)
Stan is a smart guy, it is not possible to be in top 5 otherwise. You have to make changes during game. Stan's second serves was good, his great back-hand worked wonderfully. To watch his paralel backhands to the court is like a poem to listen!!
Eventually he broke Novak's game plan, his nerves and after 3 consecutive successful sets, he defated World No 1 and became the Champion of 2016. (6-7 6-4 7-5 6-3 ) As Novak and Stan practice usually, they are good friends and they congratulate each other very friendly. It is great to see such things in sport.
For women' side, Serena was topped by Karolina Pliskova (Czech). I watched her against Kerber for the first time at final match. I think she can be like Petra Kvitova. A good player, calm and smart but she has a big problem in her services. Angelique Kerber stayed focused and determined during Championship match. It was a close match actually but Pliskova made so much unforced errors , mostly in her service. Kerber took this advantage and 3 sets game ( 6-3, 3-6, 6-4) she becomes the first German took the trophy after super talented tennis legend Steffi Graff who took it last time in 1996. She also becomes the new World No 1 !! I am sure Serena Willams is not happy about it and will fight for the Crown;)
Equal pay is important in every aspects of life, so in tennis. Winners both men and women champions get 3 and a half million dollars!! You deserved it guys, have fun!!
